Introductory Courses

These courses introduce students to the field of Chemical Technology and the basic skills, principles and laboratory practices of the chemical technician.

CHTC 130 – Introduction to Chemical Technology

This course introduces to the opportunities available in the chemical field and provides basic laboratory skills. Topics include chemical calculations, report writing, information searches, and chemical laboratory safety. A brief overall view of the chemical industry is presented. 

CHTC-132 – Chemistry Laboratory Techniques

This course presents the background principles for the experimental concepts and fundamental laboratory skills associated with biological and chemical technology.

Applied Analysis Courses

These courses are applied laboratory courses with a lecture component where the students are instructed on how to design and conduct experiments that require multiple basic techniques in instrumental analysis to answer industry-related questions.   Students participate in a series of projects where they are involved in all phases of the experimental process from design and execution to data collection and analysis.  In addition to submitting written reports on each project completed, students present an oral presentation of their results. 

These courses are designed to integrate a teamwork approach to problem solving.  Students extend their knowledge of instrumental analysis to design experiments to answer a guided question that is industry-related.  The students are given a series of well-defined questions to complete the projects.  Each project focuses on a subset of instrumental analysis techniques.  This course integrates basic knowledge of chemistry and statistics to solve industry related questions.

CHTC 271 - Applied Instrumental Analysis I

The course content includes a series of 4 team-driven projects that are designed to utilize the following techniques in instrumental analysis:

  • Project 1-UV-VIS Spectroscopy
  • Project 2- Gas Chromatography
  • Project 3- Electrophoretic Separation
  • Project 4- Florescence Spectroscopy

CHTC 272 -Applied Instrumental Analysis II

The course content includes a series of 4 team-driven projects that are designed to utilize the following techniques in instrumental analysis.

  • Project 1-Atomic Absorption and Emission
  • Project 2- Infrared Spectrometry
  • Project 3- Mass Spectrometry
  • Project 4- High Performance Liquid Chromatography

CHTC 273 -Applied Instrumental Analysis III

The course content includes a series of 4 team-driven projects that are designed to utilize the following techniques in instrumental analysis.

  • Project 1 - Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
  • Project 2 - Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS)
  • Project 3 - Gas Chromatography-Infrared Spectroscopy (GC-IR)
  • Project 4 - Mass Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry (MS-MS)

CHTC 274 -Applied Instrumental Analysis IV

The course content includes a series of 4 team-driven projects that are designed to utilize the following techniques in instrumental analysis.

  • Project 1 - Thermal Methods
  • Project 2 - Radiochemical Methods
  • Project 3 - Automated Methods of Analysis
  • Project 4 - Particle Size Analysis

CHTC 281 - Applied Organic Chemistry Lab

The course content includes a series of team-driven projects that are designed to study the following topics in Organic Chemistry:

  • The Chemistry of Carbonyl Compounds
  • Oxidation and Reduction Reactions
  • Analysis of Cyclohexanes
  • Pericyclic Reactions
  • Organometallic Reagents
