Human Resources Frequently Asked Questions

Retirement

What do I do when I want to retire?

You must contact the Human resources Department to begin the actual retirement process. We strongly recommend that you obtain an estimate from your retirement system (TRSL, LASERS, or ORP) office 18 months prior to your anticipated retirement date. The estimate can be requested by mail or you may schedule an appointment with a retirement system Customer Service Representative to obtain the estimate. Links to TRSL and LASERS is listed below.

What will the Human Resources Department do to help me plan for retirement?

Human Resources will guide you through the retirement process, supplying all of the information you need about retirement and insurance. We provide the information you need to plan for retirement, but should not advise you on what to do.

When should I choose my exact retirement date?

If you have not already done so, you should choose your exact retirement date. Afterwards, your benefits can be estimated based on the exact date.

The best place to obtain assistance is in Human Resources. We can provide personalized assistance and have your employment records. We may also provide you with information on when your benefit payments can begin on your proposed retirement date. You will also find out how this date affects factors used to determine the amount of your retirement benefit, such as your length of service, and high-3 average salary.

Can I keep my health insurance benefits after I retire?

Yes, you may continue your health insurance coverage. However, the amount of your health insurance deduction will depend upon the number of years you have had the health insurance with the Office of Group Benefits. Contact the Human Resources Department for more details.

When should I complete my application?

We recommend that you contact Human Resources at least 60 days prior to your retirement date.

The Human Resources Department has requested that I submit a copy of my marriage license and birth certificates for myself and my spouse. Where can I order a copy?

The requirement to submit a copy of your marriage license and birth certificates for you and your spouse is mandated by your retirement system, not Human Resources. For your convenience, we have provided a helfpul links below:

How do sick and annual leave affect retirement benefits?

Although unused sick leave cannot be used to attain eligibility for retirement, TRSL and LASERS does convert it to retirement credit, after you retire.

Once I retire, what happens to my sick and annual leave?

This will depend upon your retirement system. Generally speaking, you will receive a cash payout for 200 hours of sick leave and 300 hours of annual leave if you are a member of TRSL. If you have any leave remaining, it will be converted to retirement credit.

If you are a member of LASERS, Delgado will pay you for up to 300 hours of annual leave, any remaining leave will be converted to retirement credit.

Please contact Human Resources for more information specific to your individual situation.

How many years will I need to work in order to retire?

Please refer to the Classified Positions chart.

What are the tests for behavioral and office skills?

These are part of the QUEST initiative. The tests are numbered 7000 Behavior Assessment and 7001 Office Skills. The Typing Test is 7002.

Where do the scores of 80% and 70% come from?

These are the scores that Delgado plans to use as minimum requirements. They may be revised, depending on the applicant pool that results.

Do the posting vacancies time frames we are using come from Civil Service Guidelines?

Yes, Civil Service requires that jobs be posted at least one (1) calendar week. However, the Department may request to have the job posted for a longer period of time.

Delgado's Interim Quest Guidelines state that a Department can use the same applicant pool within a 60 day period. Is this a Civil Service standard?

Yes, the 60 day standard is part of the Civil Service QUEST initiative. After a job vacancy has been posted, if another vacancy for the same job title occurs in the same Department, we can use the same pool of applicants if an appointment can be made within 60 days of the closing date of the original announcement.
