Delgado Community College is pleased to announce the third Technical Skills Expo (TSE) will be held on Monday and Tuesday, October 10th and 11th, 2016!
The TSE will showcase seven programs offered by the college to high school students through its Dual Enrollment (DE) program. Some of the featured programs include carpentry, electrical, automotive, welding, industrial maintenance, precision machining, and instrumentation & control. In its first 2 years, the TSE introduced approximately 1500 students to several high-wage, high demand occupations in this region. Delgado faculty and business/industry partners gave an overview of each occupation and also provided real-life demonstrations on state-of-the-art equipment to high school students. It proved to ignite an interest in many students and led to an increase in the College’s DE program. This past spring, 15 DE students graduated from both, their respective high schools and Delgado Community College – eight from Grace King High School and the “Super Seven”, as they have affectionately become known, from Warren Easton Charter High School. There are more students on similar pathways scheduled to graduate this year.
This year’s TSE will also include a demonstration from the NOLA Fab Lab at Delgado Community College - a partnership between the College, the Fab Foundation of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms, and longstanding TSE sponsor, Chevron. The Fab Lab’s primary focus is K-12 STEM education and outreach. The goal of the NOLA Fab Lab at Delgado Community College is (1) to become a hub for educators and makers in New Orleans, (2) to provide them with open access and instruction to advance fabrication resources for their classes, and (3) to serve as a collaborative space for exploration and experimentation.
Delgado is excited to continue to introduce area high school students to many educational opportunities again this year.
