Delgado Baseball ... A Tradition of ExcellenceWhen Loyola University dropped its athletic programs in the early 1970, Head Coach “Rags” Scheuermann ventured across town to Mid-City where he saw an opportunity to establish an athletic program at Delgado Community College. In 1972, with the go-ahead from Delgado's President, Dr. Marvin Thames, and the college's administration, the college introduced baseball as its first intercollegiate sport. The team competed as a club sport for its first four years prior to joing the Texas Collegiate League prior to the 1976 season. Delgado had become the first junior college in the State of Louisiana to begin an Athletic program. The Dolphins would eventually join the National Junior College Athletic Association and become members of the Region XXIII/Miss-Lou Conference. Success was almost immediate following Delgado’s first baseball season. The program quickly established a local and national reputation. Following Rags’ retirement in 1990, his son Joe Scheuermann assumed the role of the Dolphins’ Head Baseball Coach and continues his family's legacy at Delgado today. Over the three decades of the program’s existence, the Dolphins have won numerous regional and district championships, as well as making two trips to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado, one in 1985 and the most recent in 2007. The Delgado Baseball program has served as a stepping stone for thousands of New Orleans Metropolitan-area athletes to reach the next level, whether it be four-year programs or Major League Baseball. The program continues to attract athletes from around southeast Louisiana, priding itself on its family atmosphere and rich athletic tradition. As the first and oldest Junior College athletic program in Louisiana, Delgado Community College Baseball prides itself on its national reputation of excellence both academically and athletically.
