MEN'S  BASKETBALL

Tommy L. Smith

Athletic Director Head Coach Men's Basketball

Entering the 2008 season, Tommy Smith is beginning his 27th year at Delgado Community College. He has been an assistant coach in both baseball and basketball.  He became Athletic Director in 1986 and Head Coach for Men?s Basketball in 1990.  The basketball teams he has coached have made seven Region 23 tournament appearances and have won three MISS-LOU Conference Championships. Coach Smith has been the Assistant Regional Director for the NJCAA Men?s Division in Region 23 for the past 12 years.  He has one of the longest tenures as a NJCAA coach within Region 23.

Coach Smith is a 1975 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University and earned his M.Ed. from the University of New Orleans in 1986. He played on two state basketball championship teams at Brothre Martin High School in 1970 and 1971.

Smith has a son Anthony Chritian and a daughter Kristy Lynn Reimonenq. He is married to the former Alicia Skinner of New Orleans.

 

Elden Irving

Assistant Men's Basketball coach

Beginning the 2008 season, Coach Irving in entering his ninth year at Delgado. Irving attended Redeemer High School (New Orleans) and received numerous local, state and national awards for his basketball talent In 1984, Irving was named Mr. Basketball by the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches.

Irving attended Tulane and later transferred to University of New Orleans where he finished his college career.

After finishing college, Irving went on to play with numerous tour teams overseas. His best season was with Manitoba, Canada in which he led the Bobcats in scoring for two years.

Irving has earned his Masters of Arts Degree in Urban Education from Southern University in New Orleans and plans on getting his plus-30.

 


 

WOMEN'S  BASKETBALL

Eddie Fields

Head Coach Women's Basketball

Beginning with the 2008-09 season, Eddie Fields will coach the Delgado women?s basketball team. Fields takes over for Tommy Smith who had guided the Dolphins men and women's program since the teams resumed play following Hurricane Katrina.


Fields is an East Jefferson graduate and went on to play college ball at Oklahoma. In high school Fields was chosen Most Valuable Player and was an all-state honoree. At Oklahoma, he earned four letters and twice gained All Big Eight Conference honors.

In 1977, Fields was drafted by the Chicago Bulls but opted to play for the Harlem Globetrotters.

 

Jessica Neveu

Assistant Coach Women's Basketball


Neveu enters her first year as an assistant women's basketball coach at Delgado. Neveu is a 2007 graduate of St. Louis University with a bachelors degree in Psychology.

Neveu spent one year coaching at St. Joseph's High School in Alameda, California.

She attended Newman High school where she was a four-year letter winner in basketball and three-year winner in softball. Was an All-Metro and All district selection in both sports. Selected to participate in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association's 2001 All Star basketball game.

 


BASEBALL

Joe Scheuermann

Head Baseball Coach

Now in his 19th season as head baseball coach at Delgado Community College, Scheuermann is continuing a proud family tradition while continuing to build an impressive record of achievement as one of Louisiana's most respected baseball coaches.

Scheuermann developed into a three-year starter as a second baseman at Redemptorist High school, twice earning all district honors. He was team captain of the Ram's final team in 1980 which went on to capture the state Class 2A championship.

After graduation, Scheuermann signed with Delgado. During his two years, the Dolphins won back-to-back conference championships. Following his sophmore season, Scheuermann moved onto Tulane University and in 1984 he was the team captain and won the team's leadership award.

Graduating from Tulane, Scheuermann deceided to stay with the Green Wave. He became one of coach Joe Brockhoff's assistant and stayed until 1990.

Taking over at Delgado in 1990, Scheuermann quickly made his teams consistant winners. His 1992 Dolphins were ranked in the top 10 most of the season and finished with a 41-15 record.

Most recently, Scheuermann led the Dolphins to the 2007 South Central District Championship and later went on to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was named 2007 Region XXII Coach of the Year.

Delgado's baseball program has sent more than 125 players onto Division I baseball programs throughout Louisiana and the nation.

Scheuermann is married to the former Shelly Faust. Joe and Shelly are the parents of Tyler, 20, now in his second year at Delgado and Nataly, 15, a ninth grader at Ursuline Academy. The family resides in the New Orleans community of Lakeview close to Delgado.

 

Brady Benoit

Assistant baseball coach

Benoit joins the Dolphins following a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie, Louisiana. While at Rummel, Benoit was a member of the Rummel-based Nationwide Restoration's 2006 American Legion National Championship team. Prior to his time at Rummel, Benoit was Head Coach at Ridgewood Prep School from 2001-2005; during which two of his teams advanced to state tournaments.

Benoit attended Ridgewood Prep School, where he graduated in 1995. He went on to be a four-year baseball letterman at the University of New Orleans. While at U.N.O., Benoit was a member of the Privateer's 1996 NCAA Regional Team. He went on to serve as a graduate assistant during the 2000 season when the UNO squad captured the Sun Belt Conference Title.
