R.N. Refresher Course
The Registered Nurse Refresher course offers an opportunity for nurses who have been out of the workplace to update their knowledge and skills in a supportive, contemporary nursing environment. The course is offered in two parts: a theory component and a clinical component. In theory, content areas focus on the current role of the registered nurse including legal and ethical issues, standards of care and delegation. Physical assessment, infection control, pharmacology, nutrition, intravenous therapy and the development of a nursing plan of care that incorporates physiological and psychological principles will also be addressed, both in the classroom and the lab setting. Clinical practice complements the theory component of the course. Students participate in supervised client care in acute care impatient hospital setting.
Requirements to participate in the theory component include current RN licensure or eligibility to obtain an RN license. To participate in clinical, a current RN licensure or temporary RN permit from the Louisiana State Board of Nursing is required, as well as documentation of completion of a CPR-Healthcare Provider course, liability insurance, medical insurance, health records indicating proof of immunizations (MMR, DT, Varicella or titer, Meningitis, Hepatitis B, current TB skin test, physical exam including VDRL), a credential background check and a drug screen.
