Workforce Development and Education’s Emergency Response Institute was developed to reinforce the workforce in emergency response situations. A certificate is awarded upon completion of each course. Students can use the completion certificate for direct contact hours.

National Incident Management System – NIMS

The NIMS provides a consistent, nationwide template to enable all government, private sector, and non-governmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents. This lesson describes the key concepts and principles of NIMS, well as the benefits of using the system for domestic incident response.

Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic Refresher

The EMT-Paramedic refresher course is a
comprehensive course that expounds on the skills and knowledge acquired upon successful completion of the EMT-B or EMT-Intermediate course work. Some of the skills that must be mastered during this course include interpretation of electrocardiograms, defibrillation, intravenous therapy, advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and other patient care techniques. (48 hours, 5 days).

Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS)

The Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS) course is a multi-discipline course designed to cross train members of the emergency medical service personnel, health care providers, public health personnel, and hazardous materials personnel.

The Core Disaster Life Support – Decon course is designed to train individuals how to decontaminate persons who have been exposed to hazardous chemical or radiological agents. (8 hours, 1 day).

Weapons of Mass Destruction (PHCP)

Detailed awareness of chemical, radiological, nuclear explosives used in man-made casualty events. Course is geared to pre-hospital providers. (8 hours, 1 day).
 
Vehicle Rescue Awareness Level

Familiarization of vehicle’s components and safety features with old and new vehicle technology, vehicle entrapment 25 familiarization with the types of extrication tools and options that are used with most rescue units. On-scene safety awareness to dangers and mitigation techniques to resolve these problems, safe care and removal of injured patients and safety for yourself and others. The application of BTLS and the pre-packaging of trapped patients. (3 hours, 1 day - .3 CEUs)
 
Vehicle Rescue Refresher

Vehicle Rescue Operations Level

Training on vehicle rescue with old and new vehicle technology including an in depth description of vehicle construction, hybrids, vehicle restraint systems, and the constant upgrading safety features on today’s vehicles. Vehicle entrapment situations and removal dilemmas, and hands-on training with the types of extrication tools and the techniques that are used with most rescue units and the mechanics of each. On-scene safety and recognition of dangers and the mitigation techniques to resolve these problems, safe care and removal of injured patients and safety of yourself and other rescuers. The application of BTLS and the pre-packaging of trapped patients. (32 hours, 4 days)
 
Vehicle Extrication Technician Level

Didactic and hands on vehicle rescue training with old and new vehicle technology, constant upgrading safety features on today’s vehicles, difficult vehicle entrapment situations and removal dilemmas, familiarization with the types of extrication tools and options that are used with most rescue units. Pre-hospital Hazardous Materials Awareness Course XXSS251 8 hours $150
 This class informs emergency responders of the possible dangers of hazardous materials. The class will utilize the reference material carried by all emergency response vehicles as mandated by the State of Louisiana. Course material follows NFPA 472, and 29CFR1910.120. This course meets requirements for Jefferson and Orleans Parish licenses as well as BEMS CEU. (8 hours, 1 day)
 
Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support Initial Provider Class XXAO207 16 hours $250
This course is coordinated through NAEMT, which certifies the student for 4 years as a provider for pre-hospital trauma care. Content covered includes pre-hospital trauma assessment, packaging techniques, and trauma care of adults, children and the elderly. Anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory and circulatory systems are also reviewed. Potential trauma injuries are covered such as management of life threatening hemorrhage, fluid therapy/replacement and airway management on the basic and advanced level.

Emergency Pediatric Care XXAO209 16 hours $250
This course is coordinated through NAEMT, which certifies the student for 4 years as a provider for Emergency Pediatric Care. Content covers NAEMT curriculum for EPC, which covers A&P of an in-depth study of pre-hospital care of injured and ill children. Prevention and management of special needs patients are also discussed. This course also covers the necessary content to re-certify under the PALS refresher course upon successful completion of the PALS test. (16 hours, 2 days)
 
Swift Water/Flood Rescue Awareness Level NFPA compliant Course XXMM1068 hours $100
No prerequisite needed. Obtain an understanding of National Standards, flood types and phases, absolutes of swift water rescue planning, debris flow and mudslides, moving water dynamics, flood characteristics/phenomena, low to high risk rescue operations, contaminates/decontamination and standard operating procedures. (8 hours, 1 day)
 
Swift Water/Flood Operations Level NFPA compliant Course XXAB106 9 hours $300
Prerequisite: Awareness level training. Learn the ideologies of the “talk, reach, wade, throw, helo technique, row, go” methods of rescue recovery, hands on training using PFDs, helmets, throw bags, rescue lines, carabineers and rescue boats. Learn basic communications in moving water/flood situation; demonstrate/explain safe methods of swift moving, shallow water crossings to evacuate victims and the equipment needed; proper body position and techniques for swift water swimming (offensive, defensive and ferry angles); explain “live bait” drills; understand/demonstrate/explain basic small rescue boat operations and basic two-point boat rescue operations. Training for this course is at an off-site location.

Swift Water/Flood Technician Level NFPA compliant Course XXCQ115 30 hours $665
Prerequisite: Awareness and Operations level. Each student will have to complete watermanship skills, attend all three training days, participate in the live action night time drill, complete and pass the required written test and complete rope skills test in the presence of an instructor. Required paperwork for this course includes medical questionnaire, liability release, student tracking and emergency contact form. Participants who successfully complete all requirements of this course will receive a certificate of completion, Swift Water Patches and Identification Card. Training for this course is at an off-site location. (3 days, 30 hours)
