Admissions Requirements

Delgado Community College is an open admissions college; however, acceptance into the Ophthalmic Medical Assistant Program is by selection. The Admissions Committee for the OPHT Program reviews and evaluates each application on an impartial basis. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into the program.

Students wishing to apply for admission to the OPHT Program must submit a completed OPHT application to the Division of Allied Health NO LATER THAN JUNE 30.

Applicants who are eligible for admission to the Ophthalmic Medical Assistant Program must meet the following criteria:

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be eligible for English 101 and Math 118
  • Score on ACT, SAT, or Delgado placement test sufficient to place the student in college level courses (English 101, Math 118, and no remedial reading).
  • Possess a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in all college courses.
  • Must complete co-requisites HESC 111 and HESC 118 prior to completion of program

NOTE: If your science courses were completed more than 10 years ago, you may need to take them again. Check with the Allied Health Admissions Advisor.

To find out if courses you have taken will transfer to Delgado, call 504-671-6201 or meet with an Allied Health Advisor to have your transcripts evaluated.

Upon eligibility, the student should request the current complete information and application packet from the Allied Health Admissions Office.

Persons accepted into the OPHT Program will be required to meet the technical standards of the COA profession which are available for review in the Allied Health Admissions Office.

NOTE: You are strongly advised to schedule an appointment with an Allied Health Admissions Advisor to review your transcripts at least one semester prior to applying to the program.
