In our Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence, students are able to work on lathes, milling machines, precision-grinding equipment, and many other machine tools, all of which are state of the art and representative of what is used in the industry. In addition to machine-specific training, students also receive instruction in subjects valuable in the manufacturing industry. Industry support has made it possible to take classes on field trips to manufacturing centers and job sites in the Greater New Orleans region which gives greater dimension to the program.

CAREERS
Machinists can work in a number of areas including medical and biotechnology manufactories, prototype and tool-making manufactories, parts-production and parts repair facilities, or as machine shop operators.

The average salaries per hour for the different areas of the machine tool industry are as follows: Machinist [machine shop operator]-$19.96, Drill Press Operator-$17.19, Lathe Operator-$16.19, Mill Operator-$18.20, CNC Operator-$23.00 (LA Workforce Commission, Occupational Wage Data, 2011).
