Working on today's cars requires an understanding of the science and technology that goes into the modern, highly-sophisticated automobile. Our Motor Vehicle Technology program combines classroom lecture with intensive hands on training in our technologically advanced motor vehicle labs. Delgado offers both a Certificate of Technical Studies and an Associate’s degree in Motor Vehicle Technology. Students may choose one of the following concentrations: Collision Repair or General Automotive.
The programs are accredited by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, Inc. (NATEF). Students also have the opportunity to study towards ASE certification which increases student opportunities in the work place. In addition to the technical curriculum, in the associate's degree programs, courses in mathematics, humanities, English, natural science and social science provide students with the background necessary for effective communication of ideas and to enhance future opportunities for career advancement.
GENERAL AUTOMOTIVE
The general automotive concentration is designed to provide a foundation of general theory and operation for the tasks specified by NATEF and covers theory, repair and diagnostic procedures for all eight major automotive systems.
SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS
Through the continued support of industry manufacturers and local dealers, there are two cooperative degree programs in Motor Vehicle Technology: Automotive Student Service Education Training (ASSET) with Ford Motor Company and Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP) with General Motors (GM). Students entering either program must be sponsored by a participating Ford or GM dealer who provides supervised work experience for approximately eight weeks of each semester. The other half of the semester is spent in special classes at Delgado. Additional courses are required for both programs. You will work with a program advisor to meet these course requirements.
Working with the dealers ensures that students have the technical competency and professional level to analytically diagnose, service, and maintain the dealership products using recommended procedures, special tools and General Motors or Ford service publications. The students in Ford and GM classes will receive “factory training” through the manufacture’s online training site as well as additional hands –on training at Ford or GMs training center.
COLLISION REPAIR
This concentration focuses on collision repair and automotive painting. Students receive classroom and hands-on training in vehicle repair procedures and techniques through classroom discussions and applied lab and shop practices. You’ll learn to use specialized tools, materials and techniques for metal working and body panel installation and replacement. You’ll also learn to perform the latest techniques and procedures for high technology finishes, painting and detailing, color matching and buffing, as well as spot repairs.
CAREERS
Motor Vehicle Technology graduates can be employed in a variety of positions including test technician, diagnostician, equipment sales and service, independent business administrator, dealership service manager, service writer, engine machinist, fuel injection, automatic transmission and engine management specialist, as well as general service technician. Further training and education can lead to careers in technical education, engineering, insurance appraisal, and accident investigation, and other specialties.
The average salary for an automotive technician in Louisiana is $16.11 per hour (LA Workforce Commission, Occupational Wage Data, 2011).
Collision Repair graduates can be employed for collision repair shops, insurance companies, automotive dealerships, refinish supply companies, collision equipment companies, rental fleet companies, automotive detail shops, truck collision repair shops or go into business for themselves.
The average salary for a collision repair [auto body] technician in Louisiana is $16.87 per hour (LA Workforce Commission, Occupational Wage Data, 2011).
