ENGL 244

This course focuses on major African-American authors from the earliest days.  Students will learn the genres found within the wealth of this literature like spirituals, gospel music, blues, and rap.  Various eras are covered, including the African oral tradition, the 18th century writers such as Phyllis Wheatly and Olaudah Equino, the marvelous Harlem Renaissance with authors like Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes, to the present day and such award winning writers as Maya Angalou and Toni Morrison.  Themes such as slavery, equality, freedom, religion, and racism, as it is found in the works, will also be discussed.  Prerequisite:  A "C" or better in ENGL 102
