British Literature 2

English 222 is a survey of British Literature from 1798 to present, covering the Romantic, Victorian, and Modernist periods. As the term “survey” suggests, the course does not provide intensive study of a particular period or writer.  Instead, it is intended to demonstrate recurrent themes and issues that reflect differences between historical periods. This course is the second half of a two-semester sequence; however, it is not necessary to take the first half of British Literature because each course is independent of the other.

Students will be able to discuss, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate each literary movement and various individual writers from the Romantic period to the Post-Modernist.  In addition, for each literary period, students will be able to identify and discuss (a) the historical and cultural background and (b) the social and ethical issues.  Most importantly, students will develop an appreciation and love of literature that will enhance and enrich their lives.  Research Paper required.

Prerequisite:  "C" or better in English 102
