ENGL 251

Creative Writing

 This course  is designed to:

1. Encourage students’ creative talents
2. Guide students to improve technical facility through the use of exercises
3. Assist students to become critical readers through the study of the elements of fiction and poetry and their application to the reading of stories and poems.

This class is built primarily around the workshop—the opportunity for the student to receive feedback on the form, content, and general effectiveness of his or her fiction and poetry, as well as the opportunity to provide feedback to the other members of the class.

This course attempts to teach how to judge the value of any poem or story, how to discriminate between good and bad art, how a work succeeds or fails as a work of art, and the elements that contribute to the total work. This class seeks to strike a balance between the study of craft and its practice.

Students from this class work on contributions to Images: The Delgado Community College Literary and Visual Arts Magazine.
