This course is designed to provide students with an  introduction to the life, times, and major works of playwright and poet William Shakespeare (1564-1616).  Students will read a selection of Shakespeare’s sonnets, in addition to several of his comedies, history plays, tragedies, and romances.  Class discussion will center on several themes as they are presented in the plays, reflected in early modern culture, and still resonate today: religion, marriage, politics, the supernatural, ambition, and madness.  Assignments include group papers, a midterm, and a final exam or project.  Prerequisite:  A "C" or better in English 102.
