Background

The Humanities department is comprised of two separate programs, each with separate concentrations, and several stand-alone areas.  The two degree programs are Music, with a concentration in Performance/Education, and Jazz Studies; and Performance and Media Arts (PFMA), with concentrations in Theatre, TV Production, Speech, Journalism, and Mass Communications.  There are also several stand-alone areas, including Humanities and Philosophy.  There are also several Technical Competency Areas (TCA), which prepare students for entry-level employment in various fields.  These include Audio Engineering, and Music Business.

The Humanities Department is comprised of approximately 13 Full-Time faculty, and 30 adjunct faculty and assistants.  The structure of the department as follows: Peter L. Cho, as the Chair, followed by several program coordinators, whose job is to function as the key administrator for specific disciplines.  The Program Coordinators are: Steven C. Edwards for Music, Timothy K. Baker for Theatre, and Charles A. Findon for Humanities and Philosophy.  Each Discipline also houses lead instructors for each area, whose jobs are primarily to maintain the day-to-day function of their specific area.

 Departmental Roles and Functions

The Humanities Department fulfills several important roles and functions for the college.  First, the department serves as a unit for several academic disciplines.  Associates degrees in Music and PFMA are offered for students and are intended for transfer to local four-year institutions.  There are also several areas of concentration that are part of the college’s general education core (Philosophy and Humanities).  The TCA programs are also academic programs designed to provide students with the necessary skills for entry-level employment in specialized fields.

The second function of the Humanities Department is one of service to the college.  The Music and PFMA programs provide the college with support in the form of ensembles to perform at many college functions, video recording for documentation of many college activities, and coordination with student affairs in representing Delgado in recruitment efforts by providing materials to councilors and the admissions department.

The third function of the Humanities Department is one of outreach to the local community.  The Humanities Department offers many opportunities for the local community to participate as a member of a musical ensemble, or member of a theatre cast and crew.  The department also offers many performances to the public for both education and enjoyment.  There are multiple theatre and musical performances both on and off campus open to the public.  The music department also offers a weekly recital hour program open to the public. The Humanities Department also houses several community groups such as The Mardigras Men’s Chorus, The Sweet Adeline’s Chorus, The Crescent City Big Band, and various other groups including the Symphony Chorus of New Orleans.
