Delgado Finalist in Bellwether Award

Delgado Community College was one of 10 finalists of the national Community College Futures Assembly 2004 Bellwether Award in two categories—Instructional Programs & Services and Workforce Development.  The Assembly convenes annually as an independent national policy forum for key leaders to work as a “think tank” in identifying critical issues facing the future of community colleges.  The Bellwether awards annually recognize outstanding and innovative community colleges as trend-setting institutions. This was the first time that Delgado was recognized for this prestigious award.  Instructional Programs and Services category recognized programs and services that foster or support teaching and learning in the community college.  One of ten finalists in this category was “New Perspectives on Faculty Evaluation: Systemic Change and Enduring Values,” presented by Gayle Nolan, coordinator of Faculty and Staff Development, and Cindy Siegrist, associate professor of English as a Second Language.  Workforce Development category recognized strategic alliances that promote community and economic development.  One of ten finalists in this category was “Rollin’ On the River: Marine Ship Simulation,” presented by Kathleen Mix, associate dean of Community and Workforce Development, and Rick Schwab, project manager for Maritime, Fire and Industrial Training Facility.  Both presentations were made at the Community College Futures Assembly held in Orlando, Florida, January 31 – Feb. 3.

Delgado Northshore Advisory Board Established

Delgado Community College’s Northshore Advisory Board held its inaugural meeting on February 2.   The Advisory Board membership, representing both sides of St. Tammany Parish, includes leaders from business and industry, economic and community development, healthcare and government.  The purpose of the Advisory Board is to be an advocacy group for Delgado’s development on the Northshore and provide strategic direction for future efforts and assistance in procuring appropriate resources.

Dr. Alex Johnson, Delgado’s new chancellor, ended his official first day at Delgado addressing the Northshore Advisory Board at Delgado’s Northshore facility located in Covington.  Dr. Johnson was impressed with the show of community support for Delgado’s Northshore as evidenced by the more than 30 members in attendance.

Dr. Johnson stressed the need for a collaborative effort between the St. Tammany parish community and Delgado to make an impact on community and workforce development on the Northshore.  In addition, Dr. Johnson spoke of the tremendous growth of the Northshore and the need for an extended presence of Delgado and partnerships with other institutions of higher education to serve the growing Northshore community.  It has been noted that 25 percent of our population is college-educated – but almost two-thirds of today’s careers require some form of college training.  As a community college, Delgado strives to work with the community it serves to be an integral part of training the current and future workforce.  In addition, community colleges support the community at-large through non-credit educational enrichment classes and participation in community initiatives.

Finally, Dr. Johnson stated that Delgado is “on the cusp of doing very, very great things,” and needs partners to support those efforts.  Delgado’s Northshore Advisory Board is a strong partnership in capitalizing on connections with the Northshore community and in advancing Delgado’s efforts toward becoming a premier community college in the nation.

Northshore Advisory Board: James Smith, executive assistant to Parish President Kevin Davis; Rep. A. G. Crowe; Rep. Mike Strain; Board Chair Shelby LaSalle, president, Krebs LaSalle Lemieux Consulting; Elsie Burkhalter, Slidell City Council; Dr. Max Reichard, director of Delgado International Programs; Jan Robert, Covington City Council; Dr. Alex Johnson, Delgado chancellor; Slidell Mayor Ben Morris; Honorary Board Co-Chair Sen. Tom Schedler.
