 Delgado Day at the Legislature

Representatives from the College and students from the Allied Health and Nursing programs traveled to Baton Rouge on May 19th to participate at “Delgado Day at the Legislature” held in the rotunda of the Louisiana State Capitol.  Delgado’s Culinary Arts chefs Vance Roux and Les Demarest served delicious pastries and Nursing/Allied Health students performed blood pressure checks on legislators, government officials—Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu and others—and guests to the state capitol.

“Delgado Day at the Legislature” was organized by Nita Hutter, director of the Delgado Development Office, and Peggy Griffin, administrative assistant, Delgado Development Office.  This is the third year the Development Office has orchestrated this event, helping to keep Delgado and the College’s needs top of mind with legislators and supporters.

Dr. Alex Johnson, Delgado Chancellor, addressed the House of Representatives assemblage and received an official “Delgado Day” proclamation.  Nursing and Allied Health students in attendance were also recognized and applauded by House members.

Delgado representatives included, from Charity School of Nursing: Pat Egers, Campus provost; Lenetra Jefferson, Educational coordinator for CNA, LPN and LPN-RN; Cheryl Myers, Educational coordinator for Nursing of the Adult Client I; nursing students Corey Andrus, Kathy Cortez, Kacey Ferro, Andrea Francois, Kim Jenkins, Loren Latiker, Jennifer Lemoine, Aminat Manuel-Oni, Julie Wandera (ADN student) and Zandra White.

Also in attendance were: Allied Health’s diagnostic medical sonography program faculty members Michael Toups, assistant professor, and Lisa Schuler, instructor; diagnostic medical sonography students Rachel Morris and Shannon Laforge; Arnel Cosey, interim dean, Student Affairs and director of the Advising, Retention & Counseling Center; Carmen Walters, executive assistant to the Chancellor; Kathleen Mix, interim vice chancellor for Workforce Development and Education; Dr. Jeffrey Smith, City Park Campus provost; Harold Gaspard, acting dean for Delgado Northshore and associate dean for Allied Health; Ashley Chitwood, assistant dean for Delgado Northshore; Rick Schwab, project manager, Workforce Development and Education; Curt Cowan, Larissa Steib and Sharon Talbert of the Workforce Development and Education unit; Cynthia Kenney, dean for Student Affairs, West Bank Campus; Carol Gniady, director of Public Relations; Peggy Griffin, Development and Grants administrative assistant; Ranata Coxie, administrative assistant to the director of Institutional Effectiveness; Marvanell Williams, Executive Services assistant; Trenece Black, administrative assistant for Carl Perkins; and Yvette Alexis, Administrative Support specialist.

Later that evening Delgado hosted an after-hours reception for legislators at the Speaker’s apartment in the Pentagon.  Spotted at the reception were Senator John Hainkel, Representatives John Alario, Arthur Morrell, Austin Badon, Tim Burns, Joe Toomey and Daniel Martiny.

Nita Hutter, who is a state representative for St. Bernard Parish, the Executive Director of the Delgado Foundation and Development Director, was on the scene doing double duty throughout the day.

Summer Hours Begin

Summer hours start Tuesday, June 1.  All college offices will be open 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The shorter week is designed to conserve energy and reduce utility costs. The five-day work week resumes Monday, August 9.

Admission Application Now Online

Gwen Boutte’, director of Admissions and Enrollment Services, announces that applicants applying for admission to Delgado can now submit their application online through the Delgado website, www.dcc.edu, on the home page.

The Admissions Council, which consist of Admissions staff members from each campus, has been working on the project for more than a year.  According to Gwen Boutte’, “the testing phase began in January 2004 with the assistance of Pamela England, assistant registrar for Information Processing/Technical Support for Student Affairs; and Gregg Bond, Programming manager.”  “In the first seven days of going online, over 150 applicants submitted their admission applications for either the summer or fall semester via the web,” Boutte’ added.

It is expected that the new procedure will help expedite the admissions process during the summer registration period.  Computers will be made available on each campus for students to apply online.

The student web is interactive with the Student Information System, therefore the admission staff does not have to enter admission data.  This will make the admission process more efficient for our students.  Applicants are able to pay the online application fee on the web using their credit card (Master Card, Visa or Discover).  Currently, only students applying for credit courses are using the new system. The next phase will be to make modifications to allow international students to apply online.
