Delgado receives a Title III Strengthening
Institutions Development grant |
|
Delgado Community
College received a Title III Strengthening
Institutions Development
grant from the U.S. Department of Education for
$1.75 million. The five-year project entitled,
“Focusing on Learning to Increase Learner
Success,” will integrate student services
with curriculum and instruction by focusing on
core learning and related support systems to
increase student learning, course completion
rates and retention rates.
Delgado’s grant will
help revolutionize the way the college provides

the next five years, according to Chancellor
Alex Johnson.
“Through our learning-centered approach,
students will become more empowered in designing
and planning their futures with the aid of
additional assessments and advising
opportunities,” says Dr. Johnson. “They will
have a greater potential to understand what it
takes to become a successful student, meet their
academic goals and advance into the workforce.”

Pilot
Freshman Orientation on City Park Campus a Success |
|
The
Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services on the City
Park Campus piloted full-day freshmen orientations on
July 13, July 29 and August 3. A total of 204 new
students and 50 parents attended the new-styled
orientation days.
Unlike
the current Orientation sessions, which consist of
placement testing on one day and orientation on a second
day, freshmen completed both placement test and
orientation on the same day. An added feature of the
all day sessions was a Parent Orientation conducted by
Gwen A. Boutte, director of Admissions, and Linda
Jackson, coordinator of Enrollment Services. Financial
Assistance counselors Ana Parfaite and Dana Gables
conducted the Financial Aid portions of the
orientations.
In
addition to placement testing, college introduction, and
financial aid presentation, students had an opportunity
to take the DISCOVERY career inventory, complete a
college readiness inventory, participate in a “learning
style” workshop, meet with an academic advisor to
schedule their classes, and tour the campus.
Participants and parents also enjoyed lunch sponsored
in part by Bank One and Hibernia Bank. As an added
feature, the Delgado Dolphin Dance team provided
entertainment.
The
success of the pilot can be attributed to the team work
of the Admissions & Enrollment Services staff, Delgado
PALs, The Advising, Retention and Counseling Center, the
Testing and Assessment Office, the Financial Aid
Advisors, Academic Advisors in Technology, Allied Health
Division, Melanie Deffendall, coordinator for College &
Career Success Skills, and the Delgado Dance Team.

TracDat Training Held |
|
On August 2, a
comprehensive Planning and Assessment Training
Workshop was held for faculty and staff members
to learn how to use TracDat. TracDat is the
most recent software adopted by the college for
reporting information. TracDat, a continuous
improvement assessment software package, will
allow programs across the college to track
student learning outcomes that lead to quality
improvement at the college. In addition,
TracDat affords educational support departments
an opportunity to access process outcomes. This
software provides an excellent reporting
mechanism for the college and the Office of
Institutional Effectiveness to track progress
more efficiently.
