Delgado Provides Training to Child Care Workers

Delgado Community College is partnering with two United Way agencies—the early childhood education advocacy group Success by 6 and the Women’s Leadership Initiative—to provide training that will enable Orleans Parish child care centers to earn accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children.  Faculty members from Delgado will lead classes for child care workers.  The instruction will include safety, brain development and learning trends of the very young.  This course is part of the preparation required for Child Development Associate (CDA) National Credentialing Program for child care workers.

“Delgado responded by offering training to 16 child care workers at Royal Castle Day Care at a time that is conducive to their work schedules.  We continue to meet the needs of our students and employers by being flexible and accessible,” said Malayne DeMars, director of Workforce Development and Training Initiatives.

Honors Program for City Park and West Bank students

The Honors Program at Delgado enhances the academic experience of selected students who seek a cultural and intellectual challenge.  As a motivated community of scholars, these students are given opportunities beyond the traditional classroom to develop their potential through college and community service projects, conferences, seminars and leadership activities that complement their academic courses work.

Eligibility requirements include a college grade point average of 3.0 or higher in at least 12 hours of college-level courses and one of the following: ACT composite score of 22 or higher, high school grade point average of 3.5 or higher, or Delgado placement test score of 10 or higher in English.

The Honors Program offers a variety of courses for students to take each semester.  Courses include discipline specific courses in biology, humanities, English, history, mathematics, sociology and psychology, as well as interdisciplinary courses.  The courses are identified by the course section number (sections 164 and 184).

Students who graduate in the Honors Program receive a medallion, commendation on their diploma and recognition at the graduation ceremony.

Honors Program coordinators are Emily Cosper at (504) 485-2456 (City Park) or Bob Lawyer at (504) 361-6430 (West Bank).
