Delgado’s
Record Breaking Enrollment
Trend Continues |
|
|
Delgado
Community College has registered 16,787 students this
spring, representing an increase of 2% over spring
2004.
This
historic increase continues the trend of continuous
record breaking enrollment achieved each semester since
fall 2002, according to Delgado Chancellor Alex
Johnson.
Northshore (Covington and Slidell sites) experienced the
largest jump in enrollment—an 11 percent increase over
last spring, enrolling 1,465 students this spring. The
Charity School of Nursing had a 10 percent increase over
last year, enrolling 870 students this spring. The City
Park Campus enrolled 11,441 students and the West Bank
Campus enrolled 3,011 students.
Approximately 68 percent of Delgado's students attend
classes at the City Park Campus; 18 percent are enrolled
at the West Bank Campus; 9 percent are Northshore
students; and 5 percent are Charity School of Nursing
majors. The ratio of men to women students remains 30
percent to 70 percent, respectively.
Other
interesting statistics are 57 percent of the student
population is composed of minorities, with 43 percent
being African American students, which make up the
largest ethnic group. |

hydrant or fire department pump to provide water,
consists of a network of valves, piping and controls
which duplicate the type of sprinkler systems found in
commercial, industrial and residential buildings. The
FAST trailer was funded through a Board of Regents
Enhancement grant and designed with the assistance from

SACS Update |
|
The SACS Leadership
Team is in the process of completing the final
document for the SACS Compliance phase of
Delgado’s SACS Reaffirmation process. The
document, a complete review of all of Delgado’s
academic policies and procedures at the college,
can be viewed at the SACS website under
Compliance Audit. An electronic file and a hard
copy will be sent to the SACS Headquarters on
March 15. The document also includes
information related to the institutional
governance, student affairs activities as well
as the financial and administrative activities
at the college.
The second phase of
reaffirmation is the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).
The document is being prepared through the
efforts of Randy Brien, QEP Specialist, and a
team of faculty and staff. The Quality
Enhancement Plan, "The Learning Journey: Linking
General Education and Development Education to
Improve Student Success," is a five year plan
designed to enhance and improve student
learning. In an effort to link general
education and developmental education, three
specific initiatives have been identified:
Freshman Seminar, Learning Communities and
Faculty Development. These initiatives are
partly in existence. The ultimate plan is to
implement them college-wide over the next
five years in such a way that they enhance

sponsored by the American Technical Education

Leroy L. Kendrick,
executive director of Assessment and Credit
Programs, and Karla Sikaffy, Delgado’s
Kenner Site facilitator, both of Workforce
Development and Education, completed the ACT
WorkKeys Job Profiling Training Program to
become authorized WorkKeys job profilers. Their
certification will enable them to help employers
identify the level of skills current and
prospective employees need in order to be
successful on the job. WorkKeys job profiling
offers a concrete way for organizations to
analyze the skills needed for specific jobs and
to describe those needs to businesses,
educators, students, and job applicants. ACT
certifies job profilers throughout the U.S.,
Canada, and Mexico.

Delgado Maritime,
Fire and Industrial Training facility recently
received a letter of gratitude from Simon P.
Toland, chief officer for the Fugro
Explorer. Toland and the crew of the Fugro
Explorer took the Helicopter Fire Fighting and
Rescue course as a refresher for general fire
fighting techniques on January 22 and 23.
Toland’s letter states, “on behalf of my fellow
shipmates, I would like to thank Delgado Fire
School for what proved to be an extremely
worthwhile event. The instructor, Mr. R.
Birou, was highly knowledgeable and
experienced in his subject and he conveyed his
message in a professional and authoritative
manner. Having personally overseen many
helicopter landing and take off operations, I
realize that perhaps my knowledge of the various
safety features of a helicopter was not as
thorough as it should have been,” said Toland.
Pastry Chef Jon
Petrie, instructor of Culinary Arts,
participated in the WYES-TV “Chocolate Sunday”
event held on February 13. Delgado student chefs
Keri Brazil, Deborah Harris and
Ashley Vinot also participated in the

chocolate cups to hold mousse. Chef Christina
Nicosia, Delgado adjunct faculty member,
also participated with her creation of a
