Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton---“One-College Identity”

On March 31, Delgado Community College hosted Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton, president of Cuyahoga Community College, for two sessions of her presentation on the One-College Concept in the Student Life Center on the City Park Campus.

Dr. Thornton is one of the country’s leading experts on the philosophy of the one-college identity. She has been described in the Worthington Bicentennial Newsletter as “dynamic”… “a powerful force” … “engaging” … “her ‘just folks’ style is delightful and her enthusiasm, foresight and passion is inspiring.”

Many faculty and staff members took advantage of this rare opportunity to meet Dr. Thornton and explore the one-college identity concept and the implications it has on the college’s faculty, staff and administrators.

In the morning, Dr. Thornton addressed the benefits of “The One-College Identity” in a multi-campus district to staff and administrators. In the afternoon, she spoke about “The One-College Identity: Teaching and Learning” within the unified college for faculty members.

Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton discussed ways to maximize your leadership within the One-College Concept.

Patricia Egers, Delgado Charity School of Nursing Provost, and Dr. Diane Thames, dean of Academic Affairs for Nursing, share a thought with Dr. Thornton after her presentation.

Culinary and Hospitality Career Fair

The Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services, along with the Culinary/Hospitality Department, hosted the annual Culinary/Hospitality Career Fair on the City Park Campus in the Student Life Center on April 5. The fair attracted more than 120 high school students, in grades 10 through 12, currently enrolled in high school culinary and hospitality academies representing Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Charles parishes.

Among those students present were two student chefs from L. W. Higgins High School, who are both bronze winners in this year’s Skills USA competition held at Louisiana Technical College in Lafayette. The students welcomed the opportunity to learn about the admissions process from the staff of Admissions and Enrollment Services along with the benefits of culinary arts and hospitality degrees and certificates from the assembled Delgado Culinary Arts Department staff, including Karl Tipton, Barry Brantley, Maurice Fitzgerald and program director Dr. Mary Bartholomew. Fair attendees had the chance to observe the Delgado culinary arts students decorating cakes. The day ended with a campus tour and students enjoyed lunch in the cafeteria of the Student Life Center.

Delgado’s Early Childhood Education Participates in Celebration of the Young Child

Delgado’s Early Childhood Education students and faculty members volunteered for the annual celebration of the Week of the Young Child held at Audubon Park on April 3.

The free family event focused on appropriate hands-on activities for preschool children (3-5 years) and was sponsored by the Greater New Orleans Association for the Education of Young Children (GNOAEYC).

“The annual event is our local response to the nation-wide Week of the Young Child by NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children),” said Diane Cohen, instructor of Early Childhood Education.

There were tables with community resource information for parents and families, free food, and numerous activities for young children. Added treats were visits by Arthur, the television cartoon character, and Cajun musician/storyteller Papillion. Various Head Start Centers, pre-schools and other early childhood advocates sponsored the activities.

Delgado Practicum students from the City Park Campus hosted the very popular “baby-washing” activity in which dolls get very clean. West Bank Campus Practicum students presented stamp art using watercolor for “ink”.

“Papillion the musician had all the kids up on the bandstand two-stepping or playing the washboard. Our baby washing was a major hit. There were more students, faculty, and alumni out there than I even knew would be there, as many were representing other schools and agencies,” added Cohen.

Crafts were part of the activities provided for the children.

The baby washing activity was popular with the 3 – 5 year olds.

Kids dressed the dolls after their bath.

The beautiful spring weather added to the experience.
