Delgado
Receives $205,089 in Board of Regents Grants |
|
|
Delgado
Community College recently received $205,089 in three
Board of Regents Enhancement grants. “Distance Education
in Nursing: A Partnership Between Delgado Community
College and Louisiana Delta Community College,” written
by Pat Egers, provost, and Donita Qualey, associate
professor of nursing, was funded for $134,389. Of the 50
proposals received by the Board of Regents, it was the
highest-ranking proposal, and received the highest
dollar amount.
“Pre-Enrollment Bridge Project for Entering
Developmental Students,” written by Dave Shroyer, dean
of Developmental Studies, was funded for $50,700. This
grant was one of only three proposals that received the
full funding requested. The reviewer noted “the
importance and urgency of this effort” and that “if
students do succeed in “leap frogging” developmental
courses, the panel urges the College to share those
successes with other institutions in Louisiana and
elsewhere.”
“Using
a Mobile Computer Lab to Assist High School Students to
Plan and Prepare for Post Secondary Education,” written
by Glenn Schiro, director of student testing, West Bank
Campus, received $20,000. His grant-scoring sheet
“commends Delgado for recognizing the importance of
reaching out to high school students to increase their
preparation and aspirations for postsecondary
education.” |

Crawfest ‘05: Double the Fun |
|
A sure
sign that spring is here is the annual Crawfest
celebration. This year the celebration was double the
fun with Crawfest ‘05 being held on both the City Park
and West Bank campuses.
The
City Park Campus SGA sponsored Crawfest ‘05 serving
9,500 pounds of crawfish garnished with corn, potatoes
and sausage on April 13. The strawberry lemonade was a
nice accompaniment. The Topcats provided live
entertainment and students were also entertained with
Lazer Tag, Jousting and Bounce-n-Box games.

between Delgado Community College, Nunez Community
College, and the Louisiana Technical College (Region I
member institutions of the Louisiana Community and
Technical College System) held a Workforce Solutions
Summit on May 4 at Nunez Community College.
The
goal of the summit was to convey to the business
community the benefits of workforce development and
customized training that can be provided by LCTCS member
institutions in Region I (greater New Orleans and the
immediate surrounding parishes). The event focused on
the valuable resources that are available for
entrepreneurs and industry leaders at very competitive

addition, the summit allowed interested parties to meet
and discuss education and training issues with the
chancellors of each of the member institutions in the
region. At the culmination of the summit, Community and
Technical College Champion Awards were presented to Dr.
Joseph Savoie, commissioner of Higher Education, and
Mark C. Drennen, president and CEO of Greater New

Jobs,
Jobs, Jobs |
|
For
those who are looking for a job, Delgado Community
College was the place to be in April. There were three
job fairs held during April on the City Park Campus—the
Career Expo, the LCTCS Job Fair, and the Allied Health
Job Fair.
On
April 14, The Career Expo was held to bring companies
and qualified job candidates together under one roof and
build careers for our students. Thirty-five employers
participated in the event that took place in the Student
Life Center. It was estimated that 300 students and
community members attended. Some were hired on the spot.
Career Expo 2005 participants included the Central
Intelligence Agency (CIA), Cintas Corporation, Deep
South Investigations, Ochsner Clinic Foundation, Rite
Aid, Prudential Gardner Realtors, Hibernia Bank, WYES-TV
(Channel 12) and many others.
 |
| Some
applicants were hired immediately. |
For the
second consecutive year, Delgado was the host for the
Louisiana College and Technical College System Job Fair
held April 20 in the Student Life Center. Five colleges
in the LCTC System were represented:
Nunez
Community College,
Baton Rouge Community College, River Parishes Community
College, Sowela, Fletcher Technical College and Delgado
Community College. There was a nice turn out of eager
job seekers and the Human Resources Department staffers
agreed that “this year’s fair had a higher quality of
applicants than in the past making this year’s fair a
success.”

On
April 21, the Office of Admissions & Enrollment
Services, in collaboration with the Allied Health
Division, sponsored the annual Allied Health Career Day.
Each program in the Allied Health division along with
the Charity School of Nursing sponsored an information
booth. Current students and instructors were on hand to
discuss their programs and answer questions posed by
attendees regarding their respective program. Twenty
high schools and more than 230 students from Orleans,
Jefferson, St. Tammany, St. John, and St. James were in
attendance. Many of the students expressed an interest
in the allied health profession and are currently in a
medical career track in their respective high school.
Participants also toured the campus and had lunch in the
cafeteria. It is always an honor to be able to present
our offerings to prospective students, guidance
counselors and teachers.

coordinator of Intramurals and Student Activities.
According to Wendy Rihner, “I have tried to shape Earth
Day around the needs of so many of our students, and
since so many folks view the environment as someone
else’s problem, I tried to highlight the very real and
threatening environmental issues our students face in
their own neighborhoods.”

Staff Achievements..... |

Mercedes Munster, college wide assistant dean for Evening
and Weekend Division and Part-Time Development,
recently presented a paper to the New Orleans
Mardi Gras Memorabilia Society on Manufacturers
and Designers of vintage collectible Mardi Gras
Krewe favors. The paper included a discussion of
local designers such as India Stewart and Mignon
Faget, as well as local manufacturers such as
Adler’s and Hausmann’s jewelers.
Susan H. Tucker, adjunct instructor of
Early Childhood Education, became a National
Board Certified Teacher of Exceptional Needs
Specialist/Early Childhood through Young
Adulthood. Of note, it can take up to three
years to become a Nationally Board Certified
Teacher, but Tucker completed all work in the
first year and passed the exam.
Gayle Nolan, coordinator of Faculty and Staff
Development, and Mackie Blanton, professor of
Linguistics at UNO, videotaped a presentation on
“Creole Lenten Devotions” for a Cultural
Heritage Series to be offered at UNO this fall.
The original lecture was taped at the
150-year-old St. Alphonsus Church on Constance
Street in the Irish Channel; voice-over segments
will include images and videos of other historic
settings in New Orleans.

Dr. Claudia Saucier, director of Grants Development; and
Dr. Elizabeth

recipients of the Board of Regent’s SELECT grant
project. Delgado’s “Multi-Literate Children’s

collaborative on-line education course for
Children’s Literature with
Xavier University.
During the teleconference, Delgado was able to
share, among other achievements and challenges,
the positive response to the course in reaching
capacity during early registration. Another
benefit of the teleconference is that “lessons
learned” from McNeese State will promote a
dialogue with Delgado about other online Early
Childhood Education program offerings.
Maria Cisneros, interim College Registrar,
demonstrated how to make pork-filled pupusas, a
popular El Salvadorian dish, in the Grandstand
during the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fair on
April 24. Cisneros is a volunteer for “Mensaje”
(Spanish word for message), the Hispanic
Communications Office of the Archdiocese of New
Orleans. Mensaje was a first-time food vendor at
the Jazz Fest.

addition, Cho was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi,
