Delgado
Chancellor Alex Johnson was a featured guest speaker at
the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame Breakfast at
Exchange City on the City Park Campus on April 1st. Dr.
Johnson gave welcoming remarks to a prestigious group of
past “Laureates” and the class of 2004 nominees who are
Mayor C. Ray Nagin, Developer Roger Ogden, Keating McGee
advertising firm CEO Jennifer Keating McGee, Angus R.
Cooper, II, Cooper/T. Smith, and Mel Lagarde, of HCA
Delta Division. In his remarks, Johnson noted that “the
goal was to bring 1,500 fifth and sixth graders through
Exchange City’s program, and that nearly 4,000 student
participants from throughout the region will have come
through the program this, its first year.”
The
annual Business Hall of Fame, celebrating its 21st year,
honors and recognizes citizens and business leaders
who’ve provided support for Junior Achievement’s
initiatives.

Enrollment Period is Now |
|
The Office of Group
Benefits is conducting its Annual Enrollment
period now through April 30. This is the period
during which current benefit-eligible members
may change from one health plan to another. The
plans available are:
PPO – Preferred
Provider Organization
EPO – Exclusive
Provider Organization
HMO – Health
Management Organization (Ochsner/Humana)
MCO – Managed Care
Option (FARA)
Information about
each of the plans is available on the Office of
Group Benefits web site,
www.groupbenefits.org.
You are invited to
the Annual Enrollment meetings to be held at
Delgado City Park Campus later this month in the
Lac Maurepas room, Thursday, April 22 at 8:30
a.m. and Monday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m.
Those wishing to
change from one plan to another must complete a
document during the month of April. The
Scantron forms will be made available to the
departments by the Office of Human Resources.
Only current members who wish to make a change
need to complete a form. |

Employees Gain Information at Benefit Fair
|
|
More than 140
employees attended the Benefit Fair, sponsored
by Delgado’s Human Resources Department, held on
Friday, March 26 in the Student Life Center on
the City Park Campus. Eighteen
vendors representing insurance companies,
financial institutions, credit unions and
retirement systems participated in the annual
event.
“The Benefits Fair
included a good variety of representatives
covering employee benefits from retirement to
credit union membership. I was able to get
detailed information concerning my retirement
options and health insurance directly from the
source,” said Annette Holcomb, coordinator of
Administrative Support Services, Delgado
Northshore.
Twelve employees won
door prizes provided by vendors and the
sponsoring department.
The winners, prizes
and companies that provided the gifts are: Barry
Bailey, Financial Aid, Semolina gift
certificate, ING Financial Advisers; Donna
Brasset, Allied Health, umbrella, NOME Federal

In
addition, LACap Credit Union gave tote bags and
hats to those employees who visited their booth.
“This event is
scheduled in an effort to meet the needs of
our changing workforce. We want to provide
our employees with the opportunity to avail
themselves of information and services at a
time and place that meets their needs," said
Marlise McCammon, director of Human
Resources.

Student Successes… |
|
The American Institute of Wine
and Food (AIWF) New Orleans chapter held an
awards dinner in the Culinary Arts Dinning Room,
March 23. Two culinary students received $500
each from AIWF. They are Ronald Bonnette and
Julie Bloodsworth.

Delgado’s Culinary Arts student chefs won big at
the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Central
Regional conference held in Chicago, March 31 –
April 4.
According to Mary Bartholomew, director of
Culinary Arts, “Delgado and Louisiana were well
represented by both the Hot Foods and Knowledge
Bowl teams at the ACF competition. Louisiana and
Kansas were the only two states that had teams
to win in both competitions.”
Delgado’s Hot Foods team competed against nine
other states and received a bronze medal. Those
students are Rex Archer, Ronald Bonnette, Anne
Churchill, Marguerite Grifka and Norman Key. The
coach of this team is Chef Jon Petrie.
In addition, Delgado’s Culinary Knowledge Bowl
team competed against nine other teams and
placed second and received a silver medal. The
students are Julie Bloodsworth, Steven Latimer,
Tenaj Savoie, William Hughes and Brent
Applewhite. The coach of this team is Chef Nancy
Burback.
“Receiving a medal at an ACF sanctioned
competition is significant and will help these
students when applying for higher
certifications,” Bartholomew adds.

Delgado
Celebrates Diversity |
|
Both
City Park and West Bank campuses recently held
international days.
English
as a Second Language (ESL) students enrolled at the City
Park Campus, hosted the International Fair and Fashion
Show, a multi-cultural celebration, on the Dolphin Patio
on March 25.
During
the event, 60 students displayed arts and crafts,
artifacts, currency and literature from their native
countries. Students from Vietnam, Honduras, Colombia
and Japan participated in the displays.
Thirty-eight students took part in the fashion show
modeling colorful native attire from their countries.
Eric Hornsby, ESL lab technician, Nancy Landrum,
associate professor of ESL, and Cindy Siegrist,
associate professor of ESL, also joined in the fashion
show. Approximately 20 countries were represented with
India and Pakistan having the most students.
The
event has been held every spring semester for the last
ten years on the City Park Campus.
In
addition, the West Bank Student Government Association
held a Multi-Cultural Festival, March 30 and 31.
Students representing Egypt, Kenya, China, Mexico,
Hawaii, Honduras and France presented displays.

Two-Week Fitness
Center Trial Offered |
|
Delgado’s
Fitness Center is offering a free
two-week trial for faculty and staff
members beginning April 12 – 23. The
Center is open 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., Mondays
through Thursdays and 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. on
Fridays. The newly renovated center is
located on the City Park Campus, located
in the annex of Delgado Hall.
Susan Welch,
director of the Fitness Center says,
“Come
and be our guest at the newly
renovated, Fitness Center. Show your
employee ID at the door and take part in
a fitness assessment or try one of the
group exercise classes. This
introductory offer may motivate you to
join the fitness center this summer. We
have new showers and locker facilities,
so please bring your own personal lock.”
The Fitness
Center will offer services this summer
specifically for the faculty and staff,
so when you visit the new facility, you
will be asked to fill out a survey for
the types of services you are interested
in and the times you would like to use
the center.

Delgado Dolphins Win |
|
Delgado overcame an early 5-0 deficit against
Pearl River Community College before holding off
a Wildcat rally in the ninth inning as the
Dolphins claimed a 10-8 victory on Saturday,
April 2 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
The Dolphins (26-11) won their 15th consecutive
game at home and improved to 18-2 at
Kirsch-Rooney on the year. Delgado has won five
in a row and 17 of its last 20 games overall.

Park Library Celebrates National Library Week |
|
Delgado’s City Park Campus Moss Memorial Library
will celebrate National Library Week, April 18 -
24, by waiving overdue book fines for those who
bring in non-perishable food donations for
NO/AIDS Task Force.
Also, during the same week, the library will
conduct the annual library patron’s survey. All
patrons are invited to complete a survey form
while visiting the library. |

Donate Your Cell Phone to a Good Cause |
|
Alpha Eta Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa
International Honor Society is collecting cell
phones and/or chargers for the Plaquemines
Parish Sheriff's Office for victims of domestic
violence. The phones can be old or new and must
not be active. The phones will be programmed
with 911 by the D.A.'s office.
You can drop off your cell phones in building
4, room 20 on the West Bank Campus or call
361-6650 and arrangements can be made to pick up
your cell phone donation. |

Local TV Legends Bob and Jan Carr to Speak at
Delgado’s TV Production Seminar |
|
Local legends in the television/
radio /
media industry, Bob and
Jan Carr, will be the featured guest speakers
for the one-day “Surviving and Thriving in the
Media Industry” Television Production Seminar
held Tuesday, April 27 on the City Park Campus
in the Student Life Center.
Bob and Jan Carr will open the conference at 10
a.m. and share their experiences in early local
television including a Q/A session.
In addition, Steve Scaffidi of Ghostrider
Productions will present an afternoon session
beginning at 2 p.m. on “Developing a Film Script
that Will Sell.” Scaffidi, a well-known
award-winning producer/director/scriptwriter,
believes that “anyone, if given the opportunity,
can write a script.” He routinely presents
week-long intensive concept
development/scriptwriting workshops throughout
the country.
All interested students, faculty and staff
members are invited to attend the event hosted
by the Television Production Department and
coordinated by Lynn Robinson, assistant
professor of television production. Cost is $5
for the general public; free for Delgado
