New Orleans Mayor Nagin Roasted

The Delgado Community College Foundation presented “The Roast of the Town” with the main entrée of New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin in the Student Life Center on the City Park Campus on Saturday, April 3.  A Patron Party was followed by the dinner and the program with approximately 300 guests in attendance.

The event attracted a host of dignitaries, luminaries and friends including WDSU-TV Anchor Norman Robinson, Liberty Bank CEO Alden McDonald, Ralph Brennan, New Orleans City Council Members Renee Gill Pratt and Jay Batt, GNO Inc. Vice President Barbara Johnson, Bell South’s Janet Whiters, Harrah’s Casino Vice President of Public Relations Sandi McNamara and husband Jim McNamara, Delgado Vice Chancellor Jim Eagan, Delgado Public Relations Director Carol Gniady, and Foundation Board Members Ashton Ryan, Shelby LaSalle, Rick Legendre, Pastor Charles Southall, Ed Marshall, Wayne Fontana, Nancy Easterling, Lee Giorgio, Zella May, Ralph Fontcuberta, George Kleinpeter, William Sizeler, Admiral George Yount, Dino Paternostro, and Delgado Foundation Executive Director Nita Hutter, and her assistant Peggy Griffin.

His honor Mayor C. Ray Nagin and Mrs. Nagin were joined on the dais by Senator and Mrs. Lambert Boissiere, Senator John Hainkel, New Orleans Councilman-at-Large Oliver Thomas, Pastor Charles Southall, Delgado Chancellor Alex Johnson, and WWL-TV News Anchor Eric Paulsen who served as Master of Ceremonies.

To begin the evening’s festivities, Chancellor Alex Johnson welcomed guests and extended greetings.  “I am both proud and humble to be here this evening and I am grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support our community has shown for Delgado,” said Johnson.  “We are ready to serve this community’s workforce development needs and will accomplish much with friends and supporters like you,” Johnson remarked.

Foundation Board Chairman Ashton Ryan also spoke on behalf of the Delgado Foundation lending his passionate support.  “Delgado is poised to accomplish great things for a city with so many needs… from helping with the needs of the elementary school children and high school kids, to the adults who need the training to enter the job market… Delgado is the answer,” said Ryan.

Foundation Board Member Pastor Southall provided the invocation.  Dinner was served and followed by a lively auction of impressive packages including hotel weekends, a ladies’ diamond encrusted cocktail ring, a private cocktail party hosted by Foundation Board Member Lee Giorgio and Chancellor Johnson, dinner with the Mayor at Delmonico’s, and a foursome golf game with Mayor Nagin.

The “roasting” barbs were plentiful, insightful, and very funny, as roasters took a no-holds barred opportunity to entertain guests and the Mayor, who took everything in stride with good humor and a convivial spirit.  Roasters included Senator Boissier, Senator Hainkel, and Councilman Oliver Thomas.  M.C. Eric Paulsen was never at a loss for segueing between speakers with jokes and observations.  The night was filled with laughter as well as sincerity and praise.

Senator Hainkel’s remarks included a moving testimonial for the value of Delgado’s service to the community.  “There are so many people who benefit from the work that is done here, we must support Delgado’s continued success for the benefit of the entire community,” said Senator Hainkel.

Mayor Nagin provided a rebuttal that turned the tables on roasters and friends.  The Mayor also honored Delgado with numerous compliments and appreciation of its good work.  “Delgado is truly one of our city’s shining successes… it is a center of excellence that helps to improve the quality of life in New Orleans for our citizens,” said Nagin.  “Delgado’s partnerships with business and industry benefit our economy and the future of our city,” remarked Mayor Nagin.

The event showed Delgado in its best light to a captive, receptive audience of some of the city’s finest citizens and Delgado supporters.  This is the second “Roast of the Town” produced by Delgado’s Foundation, following on the success of the last “Roast of the Town” featuring State Representative Emile “Peppi” Bruneau.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the College.

Workforce Solutions Summit Set for April 30

Delgado is partnering with Louisiana Technical College, Nunez Community College and GNO Inc. to host the third annual Louisiana Community and Technical College Workforce Solutions Summit.

The event will be held at Louisiana Technical College's West Jefferson Campus, 475 Manhattan Blvd. in Harvey, on Friday, April 30, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The purpose of the summit is to match businesses with the resources needed to build a quality, market-responsive workforce in the metropolitan area.

Chuck Fontenot (TBD) and Dr. Larry Crane of Northrop Grumman Ship Systems will speak about their experiences with the LCTCS and how it has helped them build a better workforce and grow their businesses.  Breakout sessions will include information on customized training, technical support; grant opportunities, and business incubators.  Community and Technical College “Champion” Awards will be presented to Dr. Walter G. Bumphus, LCTC system president, and Larry Graham, CEO of Chalmette Medical Center and Delgado Foundation Board Member. The awards luncheon features a keynote address from Scott Adams of JEDCO.

CATT Student Open Lab: Record High in Student Visits

Delgado’s CATT Student Open Lab recorded 12,598 students’ visits during the month of March, according to Andy Loar, lab coordinator.

This number marks a new high in monthly student visits and indicates the total amount of times a student is logged into the Open Lab, located in Building 10, City Park Campus.

So far, this semester alone, there were a total of 27,017 student visits. This number indicates an increase of 7,174 student visits during the same time in 2003.   The total number of student visits for the Student Open Lab -- 27,512 -- in the first full year of operation, in 1997, really demonstrates how much the lab has grown.

In addition, the college has cut paper usage by more than half with the new “Pay for Print” project that began in the spring 2004 semester. They used 271 reams of paper in 2003 during the first three months, and this year January through March 2004 they have used only 116 reams.

For further information on CATT Student Open Lab, call Andy Loar at (504) 483-4478.
