Excellence
in Teaching Nominees Announced

Sixteen faculty
members were nominated for the 2004 Seymour Weiss
Excellence in Teaching Award. They are—Allied Health:
Sheila Hickman and Ray Gisclair;
Arts and Humanities: Robin Cole and
Sandra Prince-Madison; Business Studies:
Mary Logan and Vance Roux;
Communication: Isaac Brumfield
and Marsha Childers; Northshore:
Christine Mitchell; Nursing: Edna Hull
and Claudia Gordon; Science and
Mathematics: Jeanne Gagliano and
Carol Juncker; Technology: Kenneth
Krieger; and West Bank: Leroy Kendrick
and Tom Russell.
The
winner of the Excellence in Teaching Award will be
announced at the Spring Commencement Exercises, May 13.
Nominees are invited to attend the annual NISOD
(National Institute of Staff and Organizational
Development) conference held in Austin, Texas, May
23-26.

Local Author Mary Gehman, assistant professor of
English, participated in Coliseum Square Association’s
“Women of the Lower Garden District-Their Homes, Their
Life and Their Legacy,” March 28. Gehman, author of
Women of
New Orleans, a History,
spoke about the neighborhood women whose work has left a
lasting legacy.
Linda Kelly, associate professor of Occupational
Therapy Assistant, was elected second alternate delegate
to the World Federation of Occupational Therapy
association for the American Occupational Therapy
Association.
Linda
Hardie, Early Childhood Education department head, was a
member of the Planning Committee for the 2004 Annual
Conference and Exhibition of the Association for
Childhood Education International held at the Sheraton
Hotel in New Orleans, April 14-17. The conference
attracted presenters and participants from throughout
the United States and the countries. Early Childhood
Education Students from the City Park Campus who were
able to attend some of the sessions included Rochelle
Wilcox, Amy Broussard, Tiesha Feltus and Inechia
Johnson.
Margo Manning, adjunct instructor for jewelry making and
local astist, had a booth in the Craft Village of the
New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, April 23 – 25. |

Participants Complete Workforce Development and Training Initiatives
Programs
Workforce Development and Training Initiatives
Department recently held a closing ceremony for the Flux
Core Welding and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
programs. A total of 13 CNA participants and 8 welding
participants received documents of completion.
The
16-week welding training course was offered through
Technology Division and the
10-week nursing instruction was offered at Delgado
Charity School of Nursing. Both training programs
prepare individuals for direct employment. Nearly half
of the participants are now employed in their chosen
fields at places such as Avondale, Trinity Marine,
Wynhoven Nursing Home, Crescent City Nursing Home and
Jefferson Healthcare Nursing Home.

In recognition of State Employee
Recognition Day, Human Resources
Department will sponsor “An Appreciation
Ice Cream Social” for all Delgado
employees on Wednesday, May 5, 3 – 4:30
p.m. at four campus locations.

Public Service Recognition Week is May 3
– 9 and State Employee Recognition Day
is Wednesday, May 5, as designated by
the Louisiana Department of State Civil
Service.
Public Service Recognition Week is a
great opportunity for managers to
express employee appreciation for their
service to the College. In turn, the
Public Relations and Human Resources
offices want to spotlight employees who
do good things at work or in the
community.
Please share with the Pubic Relations
Office any gestures of appreciation or
events that are planed for Public
Service Recognition Week. The
contributions of Delgado employees and
managers’ comments regarding their
employees will be highlighted in

Spring
Graduation is May 13 |
|
Commencement Exercises will be held on Thursday, May 13
at 7 p.m. at the Lakefront Arena. Ann Williamson,
Louisiana’s Secretary of the Department of Social
Services, will be the guest speaker. |
|

Springtime Activities
Held
|
|
On April 17, the West Bank Campus SGA sponsored
their first Crawfest. The event included boiled
crawfish, games for the kids, a space walk,
water slide, live entertainment and a talent
show. Delgado students, faculty and staff and
their immediate family members enjoyed the
festivities.
City Park Campus SGA sponsored their annual
Crawfest on the soccer field, April 21. Live
bands entertained while students, faculty and
staff enjoyed the crawfish party.
In addition, the Health Services Office organized a
blood drive and representatives from both the
American Lung Association and the Council on
Drug and Alcohol Awareness representatives
provided health care presentations.
A voter registration was also organized for the Delgado
students.
Another springtime event held recently was Earth
Day. The Delgado Greens, an environmental
student organization, sponsored Earth Day on
April 22 with activities held on the Patio on
the City Park Campus. There were information
tables, live entertainment, refreshments and
plants (provided by the Horticulture Technology
program) for sale and prizes.
