Delgado Community College’s radio station will join hundreds of other campus radio stations throughout the country and around the world to celebrate College Radio Day Friday, October 2, 2015.
To mark the occasion Dolphin Radio, WXDR-LP 98.9 FM, will host a live remote broadcast from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the Delgado City Park Campus Student Life Center. Renowned musicians The Stooges Brass Band, Henry Turner Jr. and others are slated to perform, and the event will include an Open Mike show.
Since 2010, College Radio Day has served to raise awareness of college and high school radio stations and the role these broadcasters play in promoting new music and innovative programming. This year marks the third time Delgado’s Dolphin Radio has participated, but is the first to be broadcast over the college’s new Low Power FM (LPFM) station which signed on in December 2014.
“I’m proud to call attention to college radio and especially Dolphin Radio,” said Faculty Advisor Bob Dunn, an instructor of television, film, radio and mass communication at Delgado. “College radio not only offers fresh programming and new music not heard elsewhere, but it serves as an incubator for future broadcasters,” Dunn said.
Delgado’s Dolphin Radio began Internet streaming in August 2011 and was granted an FCC 100-watt LPFM license and started broadcasting as WXDR-LP on 98.9 MHz in December 2014. Although operating with low power, the station covers much of New Orleans.
College Radio Day also will serve as a fundraiser for Dolphin Radio, which relies on student and community support to cover its equipment and operating costs.
