The students, faculty and staff at the West Bank Campus of Delgado Community College invite the public to attend ribbon-cutting ceremonies for their new Student Life Center. The event is scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 10:00 a.m. The Delgado West Bank Campus is located in Algiers at 2600 Gen. Meyer Avenue.
The new 10,800-square-foot Student Life Center includes an area for students to relax and interact with each other between classes. It also offers a dining area, a game room with a pool table, and offices for Student Government and Campus Police.
The College intends for the West Bank Campus Student Life Center to be a community resource as well as a campus focal point. Offices providing resources for women and veterans are included.
According to Delgado West Bank Campus Executive Dean Kristine H. Strickland, Ph.D., “We are thrilled to open the new Student Life Center at the Delgado West Bank Campus. The new Center provides an opportunity to enhance the sense of community on our campus. This effort originated with the students and I am happy that today their vision is a reality.”
Delgado has long anticipated providing a student life center at the West Bank Campus. Plans to construct a new facility, for which a groundbreaking took place in 2005, were abandoned after Hurricane Katrina.
The Algiers Development District (ADD) sold the former Navy Chapel at Algiers’ Federal City to Delgado Community College in June 2014 for close to $1.3 million. A $750,000 renovation budget that includes repairing, reconfiguring and furnishing the interior space, as well as painting and landscaping, brings Delgado’s total investment in the new facility to about $2 million.
With a current enrollment of 2,493, the Delgado West Bank Campus has served Algiers and the West Bank for five decades as the local public college. Delgado is building on that half-century legacy to offer new educational programs in high demand by West Bank residents and those who employ Delgado graduates.
