YOUTHROC GIVES SLIDELL 17- TO 24-YEAR-OLDS FREE EDUCATION & TRAINING

The Slidell Instructional Service Center located at 56707 Berhman Street is the recipient of a second year of federal funding which will help young adults in Slidell gain valuable construction skills while providing literacy, life skills and leadership development.

The YouthROC grant is funded by Goodwill Industries, YouthROC, the Louisiana Workforce Commission and JOB 1.

The program will be implemented by the Slidell Instructional Service Center and engage enrollees aged 17 - 24 over the next seven months in construction work related to hurricane recovery projects or green jobs to benefit the economically disadvantaged, the elderly and the disabled.

Enrollees will “earn while they learn,” engaging in construction work and receiving no-cost education and training within the program. Successful program completers will also receive vocational college credits and construction related certifications.

Additional benefits of the YouthROC Program include life skills training, leadership skills development, counseling and case management, job readiness skills, career development and job placement assistance in conjunction with the Slidell Business and Career Solutions Center.

Individuals without a GED or high school diploma are encouraged to participate.

Applications for the program are being accepted through Oct. 16, 2009. Orientation classes begin Oct. 19, and training classes begin Oct. 26.
