Awards & Recognition

Delgado Student Christine Sim wins several scholarships

Delgado Community College Student Christine Sim was awarded four scholarships for her academic, service, and leadership accomplishments. Sim attends Delgado’s City Park Campus and is majoring in general studies with a concentration in humanities. “It’s all kind of surreal. When I enrolled at Delgado two years ago, I couldn’t imagine being an honor student or a leader among my peers on campus let alone receiving all these honors. However, since the day I placed into the honors program I just kept putting one foot in front of the other and taking on any new challenge I could come across. I really had no idea it would all lead to awards like this—being chosen one of 20 scholars out of over 1,800 applicants. It’s really just so exciting and I’m so thankful for the recognition,” said Sim.

Sim is the recipient of the following awards:
•    Delgado’s Honor Scholarship (tuition for an entire academic year)
•    Delgado’s Alumni Scholarship ($600 per semester for one academic year)
•    Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship
($500 per semester for one academic year)
•    New Century Scholar (one-time scholarship of $2,000)
•    Guistwhite Scholar ($1,250 per semester for two academic years)

Sim has consistently maintained a high GPA, which currently stands at 3.94. She is also a member and serves as president of the Honors Student Council and the Omega Nu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. During her tenure with Omega Nu, she has facilitated five canned food drives for the Second Harvest Food Bank; she has organized bake sales to raise money for the chapter; she has been working with the National  Marrow Donor Program to benefit a chapter member who is currently undergoing a bone marrow biopsy; she created a scholarship question and answer forum and a map of colleges across the country that offers Phi Theta Kappa scholarship information for the entire Delgado student body; and finally she put on a C4 (student completion pledge card) signing event on Phi Theta Kappa Founder’s Day where 150 Delgado students committed to completing their associate’s degrees. “Christine’s fellowship is constantly exemplified in her always cheerful and helpful assistance to any Phi Theta Kappa member or Delgado student,” said Kim Russell, advisor of the Omega Nu Chapter. “I have great confidence in Christine Sim’s scholastic and personal achievements, as well as her volunteer opportunities and expect more in her future.”

Sim is graduating on May 21 at Delgado’s Spring 2013 commencement. She will attend the University of Mississippi (UM) to study political science with dual minors in English literature and foreign policy. After she receives her bachelor’s degree, she plans to attend law school and concentrate on corporate law. Ultimately, she has aspirations to run for a seat in the House of Representatives. Congratulations to Christine and all of the student successes at Delgado Community College, said Chancellor Dr. Monty Sullivan. Christine is truly one of Delgado success stories.”
