Service Learning is a teaching method that connects classroom learning outcomes to meaningful community service. Through service, students test and apply academic knowledge and critical thinking to meet genuine needs in the community. In the classroom, instructors facilitate reflection and analysis to enrich the service experience while deepening students’ knowledge of course content.
The Delgado Service Learning Program has grown rapidly since its inception in the fall of 2006. Today, a director, four faculty leaders, and two in-office coordinators serve as the Delgado Service Learning program staff. In six years, the Delgado Service Learning Program has trained over 80 faculty members that have engaged hundreds of students in service. Program staff provide Faculty, Students, and Community Partners with trainings and workshops, print and online resources, and one-on-one consulting.
The Office of Service Learning at Delgado Community College is committed to enhancing student learning by coordinating opportunities for faculty and students to collaborate with the community.
