The Community Care Initiative (CCI) is a program dedicated to restructuring clinical rotations in Allied Health science fields to serve at-risk, low-income, and uninsured populations. Faculty receive training in Service Learning teaching methods to work with Community Partners to provide students with opportunities in their chosen fields to serve the community’s most health-vulnerable. Students undergo leadership training and receive in-depth information about ongoing developments in healthcare policy and practices so that they can be resources for their patients and community.
Delgado Service Learning is committed to creating greater access to free and affordable Health Services in the community and at the college. With the establishment of the CCI, the Office of Service Learning is working to provide students and community members with greater opportunities to improve their physical, emotional, and civic health. The Office of Service Learning is partnering with the Delgado Department of Health Services to conduct ongoing needs assessments to provide more resources and direct care to our students.
The Environmental Classroom
Taking a holistic approach to improving community health, Delgado Service Learning encourages faculty and students to engage in Service Learning that addresses Ecological and Environmental concerns facing New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region. In 2011, Delgado Service Learning hosted a one-day conference called The Environmental Classroom: Awareness and Restoration through Service Learning, that brought together service learners, college instructors, students, and community partners from across the Gulf Coast region to discuss ways that Service Learning can address some of the area’s most pressing Environmental and Ecological concerns, especially those related to the lasting effects of Hurricane Katrina and 2010’s B.P. oil spill disaster.
Faculty Professional Development
Since its inception in 2006, Delgado Service Learning has trained over 80 faculty in the teaching/learning method. This core group of faculty members at the college has engaged hundreds of students in Service Learning and continues to work to improve professionally as Service Learning Practitioners. To facilitate Faculty Professional Development, Delgado Service Learning provides ongoing opportunities for faculty to develop their service learning teaching practice. Faculty members that participate are recognized by the College for their efforts and involvement.
Student Civic Development
Service Learning as a teaching-learning method helps students to develop a healthy civic life, an understanding that one has the ability to influence the key issues present in one’s community. Throughout the year, the Office of Service Learning, in collaboration with other college departments, hosts a number of events and programs to support Student Civic Development. Students are exposed to ways they can take their service learning and volunteer experiences beyond graduation, becoming active citizens and leaders in their community. The Student Civic Development Series discusses ways that students can continue to serve the community beyond graduation and in their future careers.
For those not currently enrolled in a Service Learning Course or unable to take part in Community Service on their own time, the Office of Service Learning provides College-wide Community Engagement activities and events on-campus that offer opportunities for students to get involved and give back to the community.
