Summer Camp for 9th and 10th Grade African American Males
About
Funded by Chevron, and in partnership with 100 Black Men and The Silverback Society, Delgado Community College will host a free 4-week summer camp on the City Park Campus for rising 9th and 10th grade African American males. Students will be introduced to an experiential learning model built upon the foundations of inspiration and innovation. The camp will foster academic enrichment, colllege readiness, and early career eposure; infuse an introduction of African-American contributions to the arts; and focus on the following specific aims:
- Specific Aim 1 - Academic Enrichment: Focused, grade-level appropriate instruction
in math and science
with reinforcement components with the goal of building confidence and further interest in STEM and business and technology-related fields. - Specific Aim 2 - College Readiness: ACT preparatory courses with pre and post-test
analysis will be offered.
An additional emphasis on the college admissions process, financial literacy, and the financial aid process will be infused into the summer experience. - Specific Aim 3 - Career Exploration: Daily career exploration workshops with a spotlight on a different emerging industry with a significant impact on the local economy. Workshops will either include an industry-relative guest speaker or a guided hands-on activity with a local industry expert.
