Delgado Community College Designated as a 2024 Center of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education

April 29, 2024

The Delgado Maritime & Industrial Training Center is a 2024 Center of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education (CoE). This designation recognizes and promotes the top post-secondary training programs that prepare students for careers in the maritime industry and this year’s recognition is a renewal of a prior designation. Delgado is the only school in Louisiana with this designation and is one of only six on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Ann Phillips, maritime administrator for the Department of Transportation, said “Your graduates have made outstanding contributions to the industry over the years, which is an excellent testimonial to the superior academic and professional education and training they received while attending Delgado.”

The Maritime & Industrial Training Center in New Orleans East provides instruction in leadership and management, firefighting, safety, navigation and other skills necessary to work in the maritime industry. The center boasts several fire training props, a simulator suite where students can learn to work on the bridge of a vessel, and a virtual reality training system to practice crisis management.

Delgado Chancellor Larissa Littleton-Steib said “The maritime center offers best-in-class facilities and training programs. It attracts people from all over the world and is one of Delgado’s shining stars.”

“The center has offered a training pathway for over 30 years that profoundly changes mariners' lives. ‘Earn as you Learn’ gives the mariners additional skills needed to become licensed professionals by earning stacked credentials,” said Rick Schwab, senior director of the center.
