Coach Joe Scheuermann Receives Dual Honors for State and National Impact
July 03, 2025
June 2025 marked a milestone month for Delgado Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Joe Scheuermann, who was recognized with two top honors for his lifetime achievement and legacy in junior college sports. Scheuermann was presented an inaugural National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Coaches Legacy Award on June 17 and inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame on June 28.
Established in 1958, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame honors the state's greatest athletes, coaches, and sports figures who have made significant contributions to the world of athletics. Scheuermann, who just completed his 35th season as head baseball coach at Delgado, follows in the footsteps of his father, Louis "Rags" Scheuermann, the local baseball legend and program founder who was enshrined in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in June 1990, almost 35 years to the day of Joe's induction. Together, they become the fourth father–son duo ever inducted, joining Dub and Bert Jones; Slats and Billy Hardin; and Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning.
Reflecting on the honor, Scheuermann shared, "My dad was my idol…I remember sitting on his lap in the dugout. The fact that we're in it together is special. This induction is not just mine—it's for all the players, families, and community that have been part of this team."
Coach Joe Scheuermann has carried forward the legacy of his father, "Rags" Scheuermann, who founded Delgado Community College’s baseball program—Louisiana’s first two-year college athletic program—now in its 50th season. After succeeding his father in 1990, Joe became Louisiana’s all-time winningest college baseball coach in 2024 with 1,179 victories. Under his leadership, Delgado’s teams have earned five NJCAA Division I World Series appearances, 14 straight Region XXIII titles, and 17 Super Regional berths. Scheuermann has also prioritized academics, with over 140 student-athletes earning degrees since 2014 and a program-record GPA set in 2024. His program is known nationally for player development, having produced 29 MLB draft picks in the last decade and sending over 290 players to Division I programs.
Beyond the field, Scheuermann has made a lasting impact through community engagement and athletic program development. He mentors future coaches, manages the historic "Rags" Scheuermann Field, and has earned several prestigious honors, including the Allstate Sugar Bowl’s Eddie Robinson Award and the LCTCS Statewide Impact Award. He played a crucial role in leading Delgado’s recovery after Hurricane Katrina, helping restore operations and renew momentum for the program. As Athletic Director since 2013, Scheuermann has overseen major facility enhancements, including the Gayle and Tom Benson Athletic Complex, solidifying Delgado’s reputation as one of the top two-year athletic programs in the nation.
The addition of the NJCAA Coaches Legacy Award to Scheuermann’s accolades cements his national recognition as one of the all-time winningest coaches in NJCAA history across all sports. Announced in late 2024, the award represents the first time since the NJCAA’s founding in 1938 that the organization has formally honored the achievements and proud legacies of multiple coaches at once.
"We've been blessed with good players who have allowed for our success. Good players make good coaches, so this recognition belongs as much to my former players than myself," said Scheuermann, sharing credit with his student-athletes.
Coach Joe Scheuermann’s honors celebrate a powerful family tradition of coaching excellence, community service, and student success in athletics and academics that continues into its third generation of Scheuermann family involvement with the storied program.
