Delgado Nursing & Allied Health Students to Facilitate a Response to Simulated Medical Emergency Using Immersive Technology
November 06, 2025
(New Orleans) – Students enrolled in Delgado Community College’s nursing and allied health programs will facilitate a high-fidelity simulation of a medical emergency utilizing life-like manikins/simulated patients on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. The demonstrative exercise will take place at Delgado Community College, Ochsner Center for Nursing and Allied Health at the City Park Campus, located at 615 City Park Ave., New Orleans, LA 70119 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The purpose of the simulation is to foster hands-on experience, communication, and coordination through an interdisciplinary medical response team that is identical to those working in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
What is a high fidelity simulation?
High fidelity simulation is an experiential teaching methodology that incorporates
the use of life-like manikins, virtual or simulated patients that are programmed to
have life-like anatomies and capabilities (i.e. organs, breathing capabilities, heart
rates, blood pressure, etc.). Learn more.
How will the simulation at Delgado be implemented?
The simulated patient will undergo physical therapy for knee replacement in a staged home environment, at which time the patient will experience respiratory distress. The medical emergency will require the assessment of a nurse, transportation to the hospital, and triage in the emergency room. Delgado students, under the auspices of a faculty moderator, will assess and provide care to the patient at every interval. Students from the following Delgado programs will participate: Registered Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy Assistant, Paramedic, Medical Lab Tech, Radiology Technician, and Emergency Medical Technician. As an industry partner, LCMC-West Jefferson will provide an ambulance for the patient transport component of the exercise. Dr. Wade Estopinal, a retired Emergency Department physician has volunteered to serve as the ED physician. Xpress Ray Inc. and Miley Meds will also provide portable x-ray equipment for use in the simulation and Miley Meds in Pearl River, LA.
What innovative technology will Delgado students use?
Delgado is the largest educator of nurses and allied health professionals in Louisiana, training 1,200 students for these career paths annually. The College train students inside of the Ochsner Center for Nursing an Allied Heath at Delgado, which of 120,000 sq. ft. of total space and is fully equipped with a simulated teaching hospital, ultra-high-fidelity simulators, modern classrooms, equipment, and technology, and state-of-the art labs.
