Delgado’s Nursing & Allied Health Students Perform Simulation Demonstrating Continuity of Care
December 02, 2025
Students enrolled in Delgado Community College’s Registered Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA), Paramedic, Medical Lab Technician (MLT), Radiologic Technology, and Emergency Medical Technician programs completed a high-fidelity simulation on Wednesday, Nov 12, 2025.
The entire simulation lasted for about an hour was conducted at Delgado’s City Park Campus in the Ochsner Center for Nursing and Allied Health. The state-of-the-art facility includes a fully functioning teaching hospital that is equipped with medical supplies, equipment, and technology to support immersive learning experiences.
Rene Randall, Professor and Respiratory Therapy Program Director at Delgado, said: “This simulation was the first of its kind at Delgado, beginning with a medical emergency in the patient’s home environment, requiring activation of emergency medical services for assessment and transport to the hospital. This two-part scenario highlighted the importance of continuity of care, communication, and teamwork across healthcare disciplines.”
During the simulation, students provided coordinated care on a high-fidelity manikin
that was in respiratory distress. Through close collaboration and communication, the
students intervened during the staged medical emergency, provided transport via ambulance
to the simulated hospital, facilitated emergency room triage, and performed diagnostic
testing on the patient via labs, x-rays, and an ECG.
The Delgado students who participated in the simulation are:
- Nursing: Kendrell Cole, Keoca Curtis, Jamie Dawson, Celeste Guichard, Breionna Jackson, Alexa McClinton, Reese Proctor and Stefanie Zeledon
- Respiratory Therapy: Raina Smith, Kevine Thomas, and James Woodward
- Paramedic: Angela Granier and Brittney Hardouin
- Radiologic Technology: Ashley Harber, Sarah Johnson, Hanna Bourdonnay, Zaneb Hussain
- Medical Lab Technician: Lindsey Middlebush, Dominique Fazande and Mallory Alexis
- Physical Therapy Assistant: David Allen, Maecie Vince, Bianca Hall, Ahlaya Washington
Jennifer Fernandez, Dean of Nursing at Delgado said: “This unprecedented interprofessional experience simulation reflects the very heart of Delgado's vision—a place where collaboration, innovation, and purpose unite to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals. Only Delgado has the breadth of programs and the remarkable faculty expertise to create an experience of this magnitude. Our students flourish because our faculty lead with excellence, and our healthcare partners stand with us to expand opportunity and strengthen the future of care for communities across Louisiana. Here We Grow!”
Randall coordinated the event with the assistance of a great faculty team, including: Mavis Larrimer, Respiratory Care Technology; and Dr. Pam Kemp, Dr. Alicia Quirk, and Mia Woodroof from Nursing. Faculty who assisted with their students' participation: Dr. Kim Uddo (Nursing), Emily Carruth (PTA), Jimmy Stevens (EMT), Terri Diaz (EMT), Tammy Kleibert (Radiography), and Shannon Skena (MLT).
LCMC-West Jefferson provided an ambulance for the patient transport component of the exercise. Dr. Wade Estopinal, a retired Emergency Department (ED) physician, volunteered as the ED physician. Xpress Ray Inc. and Miley Meds provided portable x-ray equipment for use in the simulation.
