SUNO and Delgado Sign Universal Transfer Agreement; First Degrees Awarded

May 30, 2019

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) and Delgado Community College entered into a general articulation agreement during a signing ceremony Thursday, May 30, 2019 on SUNO’s Park Campus.

The new agreement allows SUNO students to transfer credits back to Delgado to attain a degree, diploma or certification, and SUNO to guarantee placement at the junior level, as well as college credit, for all Delgado students transferring to accepted programs.

SUNO Chancellor Lisa Mims-Devezin and Delgado Interim Chancellor William Wainwright signed the agreement, along with SUNO Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs David Adegboye and Delgado Interim Vice Chancellor & Provost Mostofa Sarwar, at 9 a.m. in SUNO’s Bashful Administration Building.

Chancellor Wainwright also presented and conferred associate degrees retroactively to current SUNO students Yashica Martin and Mariah Murray, the first beneficiaries of the new agreement.

According to administrators, cooperation between the two institutions will underscore the importance of interactions between community colleges and universities in the state.

“This agreement represents a significant rededication by Delgado and SUNO to share our combined educational resources with the goal of increasing higher education opportunities for residents of our city, region and state,’’ said Wainwright. “It is the framework for the many close partnerships that will be nurtured between both institutions to provide the very best experiences for our students.”

As part of the agreement, both institutions will review their academic programs to determine which programs could lead to associate degrees at Delgado and baccalaureate degrees at SUNO. The institutions also will form a committee to promote new cooperative academic programs.

In addition, selected faculty from both institutions will have joint meetings at least once a year, and appropriate students organizations from both campuses will do the same. Finally, the two student newspapers will be encouraged to publish a joint issue at least once a year.

SUNO Chancellor Mims-Devezin said SUNO has been admitting transfer students from Delgado over the years based largely on the transfer student’s own initiative. The Universal Transfer Agreement will improve publicity of the unique contributions of both institutions to higher education in Louisiana.

“The agreement signed today is a win-win for both institutions regarding potential reward of increased enrollment and yearly degree completers on both campuses,” she said. “We congratulate the first students to benefit from this great educational strategy.”
