What Were You Wearing? Exhibit
October 21, 2026
The What Were You Wearing? exhibit is a powerful visual arts initiative that challenges the stigma surrounding sexual violence and dispels the harmful misconception that a victim's clothing somehow contributes to an assault. Delgado displayed their version of the exhibit at the Student Life Center last week.
Created in 2013 and displayed at the University of Arkansas in 2014, the exhibit was inspired by a poem by Mary Simmerling. The poem challenges the deeply rooted culture of victim-blaming by addressing the question survivors of sexual violence are all too often asked: "What were you wearing?"
A college faculty member suggested bringing this impactful exhibit to campus. In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Delgado's Title IX Office partnered with the Student Government Association to bring the exhibit to life, creating an opportunity to educate, foster meaningful conversations, and raise awareness of sexual violence and the importance of supporting survivors.
Mental health counselors and advocates from Metropolitan Human Services and the New Orleans Police Department's Victim Witness Assistance Unit were also present to provide attendees with resources, guidance, and support.
